As a librarian, I am obsessed with finding and reading new fabulous books. My tastes vary from the very light and fluffy to more in-depth social commentary. A great website I adore is www.goodreads.com. This online book journal of sorts allows you to track the books you’ve read, the ones you’d like to read and what you’re currently reading. Just like other social networking sites, you can see what your “friends” are reading and see their opinions on titles. Check it out! Another great site for finding fabulous reading that I love to check out is www.bookclubgirl.com. From author webcasts to reviews and giveaways, this site is takes fabulous to a whole new level. Loves it!
This week I wrapped up a book that had both elements of escape fiction and serious subject matter. Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult looks at religion, forgiveness and the death penalty in a poignant way that really makes you think. In typical Picoult fashion, the story is told through the voice of several characters in alternating chapters. June Nealon has experienced hardship beyond imagination and is facing yet another tragic situation as her young daughter awaits a heart transplant. Shay Bourne, a death-row inmate, has made his mistakes and wants to make amends by donating his heart after execution. Picoult examines what is religious atonement and who gets to decide what religion really is. Also looking at the death penalty, the book opens your eyes to issues that most of us never have to endure. While not for the faint of heart, the book is well written and makes you think – would you be able to forgive?
After finishing this book, I quickly picked up on Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyers. While I wouldn’t say I’m Twilight-obsessed like many of my teenaged-patrons, I can’t wait to find out what will happen to Bella, Edward and Jacob.
Until next time,
The Fabulous KT
