I'll admit it, I love MySpace! Yes, I am a professional, college graduate/graduate student and married but I still can't hide the excitement I feel when I get a "comment" from my MySpace friends. The instant gratification is so satisfying. Perhaps, MySpace taps into my inner voyeur and gives me a way to see whats going on in my friends lives and give them a peak into mine. Maybe, it's just my joy in feeling loved. Now, I don't accept "friend" request from those I don't know and I definately don't use MySpace to meet new people. However, as a way to keep in contact (almost daily) with my friends, MySpace is fabulous.
Today at the final Webbie.20 class, we created MySpace accounts and I am super excited to get started on our new library page (www.myspace.com/ilionfreepubliclibrary) As many people have mentioned during the class, most everyone under 21 seems to be born with the ability to conquer these sites. For libraries, this is could be the key to reaching a sector of the population that isn't always eager to visit the library. Every day after school, our public computers are filled with teens feverishly logging into their MySpace accounts to "see" what their friends are up to. If libraries can get teens that excited about the library through a MySpace page, perhaps teens will become more involved members of the library community. As we all know libraries are changing, in order to keep up with the times, libraries need to be open to trying new ways to reach all of their patrons -- especially those who will ultimately become our future!
